About Operculina Turpethum

Turpeth is a perennial root that grows as an Ivy and has many species. The plant has many stems that are red and almost triangular in cross section. The leaves of this plant are heart-shaped, pointed, and broad, and are attached to the stems by relatively elongated petioles. The flowers are white, large, horned, and integrated.

Operculina turpethum fruit is spherical, pointed, pyramidal, pink, and opaque. On the surface of this fruit, there are three longitudinal grooves and inside them, usually three or four black seeds, almost spherical and relatively large.

The root is cylindrical, light, hollow, slightly tangled and has an uneven surface. It has dark skin and white inside. Inside the root of some of its species are black and some are yellow. Numerous small holes can be seen in its cross section, which are filled with a resinous substance in the form of small yellow droplets, which is the laxative substance. The root is tasteless at first. But a few moments after tasting, it turns to a nauseating taste.

The best root has a soft surface, it is easily powdered, it tastes a little spicy, it is not worm-eaten, it is fresh, white, hollow, and has resin inside.

Research & Studies on Bulk Turpith Root for Export

Iranian Turpith Root (Turpeth Root) – Operculina turpethum (L.) Silva Manso

Bulk Turpith Root for Export refers to the dried, cleaned root of Operculina turpethum (syn. Ipomoea turpethum), a Convolvulaceae climber traditionally known as trivrit, turpeth, Indian jalap or nishoth. Taxonomic resources such as Kew’s Plants of the World Online confirm the accepted name Operculina turpethum and its distribution across Asia, the Middle East and parts of Africa (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew – https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:270819-1).

A 2017 review in Pharmacognosy Reviews describes O. turpethum as a classical purgative root used in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and traditional Persian medicine, rich in resin glycosides (turpethin, turpethein), triterpenes, steroids, flavonoids, tannins, coumarins and mucilage (https://www.phcogrev.com/article/2017/11/22/104103phrevphrev617). Reviews in Unani and integrative medicine confirm similar phytochemistry and highlight the root’s role in constipation, liver disorders, metabolic syndromes and inflammatory conditions (International Journal of Unani and Integrative Medicine – https://www.academia.edu/38801163/Medicinal_importance_of_Operculina_turpethum_Linn_A_Review).

For international buyers who want to buy Turpith root in bulk, these publications support positioning O. turpethum as a technically well-characterised raw material suitable for bulk dried Turpeth root for herbal formulations, bulk Turpith root for Ayurvedic preparations and broader functional applications, provided it is sourced as food grade Turpith root for export from a reliable Turpith root raw material supplier from Iran.

1. Pharmacological profile and bioactive components

Comprehensive reviews and experimental studies show that Turpith root exhibits:

  • Purgative and laxative action – Resin glycosides (turpethin, α/β-turpethein) concentrated in the root bark drive strong purgative activity, historically aligning Turpith with the “jalap roots” complex of Convolvulaceae used as classical laxatives (Journal of Ethnopharmacology – “The jalap roots: A herbal legacy from the neotropics to global materia medica,” https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378874124016155).

  • Laxative and bowel-cleansing effects in vivo – In a mouse model, O. turpethum extracts produced dose-dependent increases in intestinal motility and significant laxative effects, confirming traditional use as a purgative (Impact Journals – “Investigation of the laxative activity of Operculina turpethum extract in mice,” https://impactfactor.org/PDF/IJPCR/7/IJPCR%2CVol7%2CIssue4%2CArticle9.pdf).

  • Anti-ulcer and gastroprotective activity – An Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine study reported that methanolic and hydroalcoholic stem extracts significantly reduced gastric lesions in aspirin + pylorus-ligation ulcer models (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23476683/).

  • Hepatoprotective effects – A study in Pharmacognosy Research showed that O. turpethum root extract protected against CCl₄-induced acute liver damage in rats (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25276062/).

  • Antidiabetic and metabolic benefits – A 2019 paper in International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research demonstrated that flavonoid, tannin and saponin fractions of O. turpethum showed strong in-vitro α-amylase inhibition and in-vivo antidiabetic effects with improved lipid profiles (https://ijpsr.com/bft-article/antioxidant-and-anti-diabetic-potential-of-operculina-turpethum-l-silva-manso-leaf/).

  • Protection against diabetic complications – An experimental study in International Journal of Phytopharmacy Research reported that O. turpethum improved neuropathy, neurodegeneration and cardiac changes in STZ-induced diabetic rats (https://phytopharmajournal.com/assets/pdf_files/Vol5_Issue6_02.pdf).

  • Analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties – A 2020 study assessed the methanolic root extract and found significant analgesic effects in mice, suggesting safer alternatives to conventional NSAIDs (International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences Review and Research – https://globalresearchonline.net/journalcontents/v64-2/09.pdf).

  • Antioxidant and antimicrobial effects – Phytochemical work found abundant alkaloids, saponins, mucilage and tannins in various plant parts with strong free-radical scavenging capacity and antimicrobial activity (Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry – https://www.phytojournal.com/archives/2016/vol5issue5/PartC/5-5-17-538.pdf).

  • Anthelmintic potential – A 2025 mechanistic study in Journal of Ethnopharmacology explored anthelmintic activity and mechanisms of O. turpethum resin glycosides, reinforcing its relevance for gastrointestinal parasite formulas (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41048577/).

Recent evidence-based Unani appraisals summarise these activities and classify O. turpethum as a plant with validated laxative, hypoglycaemic, anti-dyslipidaemic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-ulcer and hepatoprotective actions (Journal of Drug Delivery and Therapeutics – https://jddtonline.info/index.php/jddt/article/view/5947).

For Turpith root bulk buyers for pharmaceutical industry, bulk Turpith root for herbal extracts and tinctures and bulk Turpith root for nutraceutical manufacturers, these data provide a broad pharmacological foundation for product dossiers and R&D claims, subject to local regulations.

2. Clinical and human-relevant evidence

Although most work is preclinical, several human-relevant studies involve Turpith root as a key component:

Together with historical pharmacopoeial use, these trials support professional interest in:

  • bulk Turpith root for herbal capsule and tablet manufacturing

  • bulk Turpith root for traditional medicine production in Ayurvedic, Unani and Persian-inspired formulas

  • wholesale Turpeth root for laxative remedies where regulated and used under practitioner supervision

3. Volatile constituents and extract chemistry

Beyond resin glycosides, detailed chemical work has characterised volatiles and fractions:

  • A 2014 paper in Pharmacognosy Journal identified hydrodistilled volatile constituents from O. turpethum roots, including monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes that may contribute to anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects (https://www.phcogj.com/article/1543).

  • Phenolic, saponin, mucilage and tannin-rich fractions have been quantified across roots, leaves and stems, revealing high levels of tannins and mucilage that support applications in bowel regulation and mucosal protection (https://www.phytojournal.com/archives/2016/vol5issue5/PartC/5-5-17-538.pdf).

This chemistry underpins the interest of bulk Turpith root for herbal extracts and tinctures and bulk dried Turpeth root for herbal formulations used globally in detox, digestive and liver-support concepts.

4. Regional applications in key markets

4.1 United Kingdom & European Union

In the UK and EU, Turpith root appears primarily in Ayurvedic, Unani and traditional Persian-inspired products distributed through herbal pharmacies and specialty channels. Regulatory frameworks require robust evidence and safety justification, which is provided by modern reviews and experimental work cited above.

Manufacturers and importers in these markets:

  • Use O. turpethum as a classical purgative in complex formulas for occasional constipation or “detox” regimes, sourced as bulk Turpith root for traditional medicine production.

  • Integrate Turpith root extracts into liver, lipid and metabolic-support blends in line with antidiabetic, anti-dyslipidaemic and hepatoprotective data. IJPSR+3

  • Require a wholesale Turpith root supplier who can provide full documentation and technical files for regulatory review.

For professional European buyers looking to buy Turpith root in bulk, a consistent origin with traceability, supported by peer-reviewed science, is essential to justify premium Iranian Turpith root wholesale, particularly for practitioner-only brands and pharmacy ranges.

4.2 United States

In the USA, Turpith root is recognised in Ayurvedic and integrative medicine circles as a potent purgative and detoxifying herb. While most pharmacological studies originate from India and Iran, US nutraceutical formulators rely on this evidence base to design:

  • Multi-herb digestive and bowel-cleansing formulas that incorporate bulk dried Turpeth root for herbal formulations and wholesale Turpeth root for laxative remedies, under careful dosing controls.

  • Liver- and metabolism-support products combining Turpith root with milk thistle, dandelion and other hepatoprotective botanicals, leveraging hepatoprotective and antidiabetic findings. PMC+3

  • Specialised formulations inspired by the Anti-Asthma® trial (combining Glycyrrhiza, Viola and Operculina turpethum) for respiratory support, adjusted to U.S. regulatory standards. PubMed+2

These applications require food grade Turpith root for export and attract Turpith root bulk buyers for pharmaceutical industry and bulk Turpith root for nutraceutical manufacturers working with evidence-based herbal ingredients.

4.3 Canada

Canadian natural health product (NHP) regulations emphasise evidence and safety. Reviews in Pharmacognosy Reviews, Unani journals and diabetes-focused papers offer robust support for Turpith root’s laxative, antidiabetic, anti-ulcer and hepatoprotective activities, which Canadian NHP companies use in internal monographs and submissions. PMC+6

Typical uses in Canada include:

  • Complex bowel formulas and digestive tonics where Turpith root is a minor but potent component.

  • Capsules and tablets formulated with small standardised doses, relying on bulk Turpith root for herbal capsule and tablet manufacturing.

  • Metabolic-support blends where antidiabetic fractions of O. turpethum add functional value to blood-sugar and lipid-focused products. PubMed+3

For Canadian distributors, sourcing from a Turpith root raw material supplier from Iran allows consolidation of high-quality Turpeth root for export with other Iranian botanicals in single shipments.

4.4 Australia & New Zealand

In Australia and New Zealand, Turpith root is positioned largely within Ayurvedic and complementary medicine sectors. While local universities have not focused specifically on O. turpethum, practitioners rely on international literature, including:

  • The 2017 Pharmacognosy Reviews article on bioactive components and pharmacology. phcogrev.com+1

  • Reviews on Unani prophylactic use and antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects. JDDT+4

In these markets, Turpith root is primarily used in:

  • Purging and detox protocols designed by Ayurvedic practitioners, relying on bulk Turpith root for Ayurvedic preparations.

  • Complex liver, metabolic and digestive formulas manufactured according to TGA / Medsafe regulations, using bulk Turpith root for herbal capsule and tablet manufacturing at tightly controlled doses.

Quality-focused brands seek organic Iranian Turpith root for export and premium Iranian Turpith root wholesale to align with clean-label and sustainability expectations.

4.5 South Africa and wider Africa

African research groups have begun to investigate O. turpethum in oncology and liver models. An article in the African Journal of Biomedical Research evaluated Turpith root extract in diethylnitrosamine-induced hepatocarcinogenesis, highlighting anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties that are relevant for liver-support concepts (https://africanjournalofbiomedicalresearch.com/index.php/AJBR/article/view/1570).

South African and regional herbal companies use this international evidence to:

  • Incorporate Turpith root into colon-cleansing and detox products as wholesale Turpeth root for laxative remedies.

  • Explore liver- and metabolism-support formulas for export to Europe and North America using bulk Turpith root for herbal formulations and bulk Turpith root for traditional medicine production.

For these companies, a stable Turpith root wholesale price for importers and reliable supply from an established origin such as Iran are critical.

5. Safety, dosage and regulatory considerations

Reviews consistently emphasise that Turpith root is a strong purgative and must be dosed conservatively:

For this reason, bulk Turpith root for herbal capsule and tablet manufacturing is typically used at low per-unit doses, often combined with demulcent or carminative herbs. Regulatory frameworks in the UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa may restrict claims or require specific warning statements, so Turpith root is generally targeted to professional or practitioner-led product lines.

6. Key industrial applications supported by research

Across the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, the scientific literature supports several clear application clusters for Bulk Turpith Root for Export:

  1. Laxative and bowel-cleansing formulations

    • Resin glycoside–driven purgative action supports colon-cleansing and occasional constipation products. impactfactor.org+4

    • This segment relies on bulk dried Turpeth root for herbal formulations and wholesale Turpeth root for laxative remedies, always within regulated dose limits.

  2. Metabolic and liver-support nutraceuticals

    • Antidiabetic, antioxidant, hypolipidaemic and hepatoprotective data justify Turpith root as a minor but potent ingredient in metabolic and liver formulas. IJPSR+4

    • These products typically use bulk Turpith root for nutraceutical manufacturers and bulk Turpith root for herbal capsule and tablet manufacturing in synergy with other botanicals.

  3. Respiratory and immune-support combinations

    • The Anti-Asthma® trial demonstrates Turpith root’s contribution within a multi-herb respiratory formulation, encouraging development of similar combined products in regulated markets. PubMed+3

    • Such formulations often rely on bulk Turpith root for herbal extracts and tinctures and targeted practitioner use.

  4. Traditional medicine and Ayurvedic/Unani preparations

    • Classical preparations in Ayurveda (trivrit-based virechana formulas) and Unani (Turbud-containing compounds) continue to inspire modern products, particularly in diaspora markets across the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. unanijournal.com+5

    • This segment is best served by bulk Turpith root for Ayurvedic preparations and bulk Turpith root for traditional medicine production at GMP-certified facilities.

7. Commercial positioning – Iranian Bulk Turpith Root for Export

Based on the international research and traditional evidence summarised above, Iranian Turpith root can be positioned to professional buyers as:

  • A well-characterised purgative and functional root with validated laxative, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. phcogrev.com+6
