This black licorice extract is supplied as a manufacturing ingredient. It is distinct from licorice-flavoured confectionery and from unprocessed dried licorice root.
Botanical Identity
The botanical source is Glycyrrhiza glabra L., a member of the Fabaceae family. Licorice is also spelled liquorice, particularly in British English. Persian names include شیرین بیان for the plant and عصاره شیرین بیان for the extract.
Solid liquorice extract may also be described commercially as black licorice, licorice extract blocks or licorice gum. Here, “licorice gum” refers to the processed extract rather than a naturally exuded plant gum.
The supplied product is an extract made from the root. Its specifications differ from those of whole roots, cut roots and root powder.
For botanical reference, see Kew’s Plants of the World Online.
Product Form and Physical Characteristics
The product is supplied as dried solid blocks of black licorice extract. Block dimensions, surface appearance, hardness and the proportion of broken material should be assessed against the selected sample.
Please specify your requirements for:
- Block size and acceptable broken material
- Colour and general appearance
- Moisture content
- Handling and processing characteristics
- Dissolution or dispersion performance in your intended process
- Insoluble matter, where relevant
- Additional analytical requirements
The product contains licorice extract only, without added ingredients. This composition statement does not mean that the extract is an isolated chemical or has a guaranteed percentage of any particular constituent.
This page covers solid blocks. Powder, liquid extract, isolated compounds and dried root material require separate product specifications.
Applications
Depending on the selected batch and agreed requirements, solid licorice extract may be considered for:
- Confectionery and licorice-flavoured product manufacture
- Food and beverage flavouring formulations
- Further preparation of flavouring ingredients
- Botanical ingredient development
- Professional formulation and analytical research
The selected material must be assessed for the intended process, formulation and destination market. Buyers should confirm any requirements for dissolution, filtration, flavour strength or analytical composition before ordering.
Specialised cosmetic, supplement or pharmaceutical applications require a separate technical and safety assessment. No therapeutic effect or finished-product approval is implied.

Packaging and Storage
Bulk packaging, liners, block presentation and net weight per package are agreed during quotation. Packaging should protect the extract from moisture, contamination and external odours.
